Mobility Counts - Exercising with Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a medical enigma of sorts - a disorder that is often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. Many who suffer from this condition have settled into a sedentary lifestyle by virtue of chronic, random, and intolerable pain. This condition is further complicated by inexplicable malaise (generalized discomfort), muscle weakness, fatigue, stiffness, and tenderness, and will often coexists with the autoimmune disorders of rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

Fibromyalgia

Sufferers of fibromyalgia lament that the psychological and social aspects associated with prolonged and chronic illness, together with the unpredictable dynamic of the condition, often leads to depression and a sense of hopelessness. As such, pain free mobility is a challenge for some, with rigorous exercise being a distant and unfathomable goal for the vast majority.
With such a bleak outlook, is exercising with fibromyalgia a manageable and attainable reality?

MOBILITY COUNTS
It is important to remember that mobility counts, no matter how small, even while experiencing a heightened level of symptoms. Notwithstanding the fact that pain management is a critical component of daily life, many have experienced favorable results with medicinal therapies along with consistent physical activity. Begin with small goals that are easily accomplished each day. Start out with low-impact exercises such as walking, stretching (even while in bed), yoga, swimming, or Tai Chi. Building strength and endurance takes time, and for fibromyalgia sufferers this time can be especially challenging. Look to loved ones for support, while remaining patient as well as persistent.

CARDIO WITH CAUTION
Also worthy of note is that those afflicted with fibromyalgia have an increased sensitivity to pressure and pain. The brain simply responds to pain differently, with increased amounts of neurotransmitters that signal pain and decreased amounts of serotonin which acts as a natural painkiller. Because of this reality, you may have to abandon the ideals of conventional aerobic exercise for the time being. The hallmark symptoms of stiff joints, tenderness, and pain are likely to be exacerbated with sudden or repetitive high-impact movement. Gradually work your way towards a more traditional workout plan, all the while building your stamina.

Whichever activity you choose, remember that it is not the duration, but rather your resolve to endure and overcome the constraints of this condition. Fibromyalgia doesn't have to render you immobile, nor does it mean a life resigned to permanent disability. Sufferers have been able to improve their overall health and lessen the severity of pain with consistent physical activity, in tandem with a well-balanced diet, emotional and psychological wellness, proper sleep, limited stress levels, and boundless amounts of perseverance. Be well - be hopeful - be inspired - be mobile.
