  Fish Oil Supplements and Bodybuilding

The use of fish oil is recommended for a wide range of health conditions and there are very few people who would not benefit from supplementation in some shape or form. Obviously the better will have for fish oil. However, there are particularly requirements on bodybuilders that may imply that fish oil is more indicated than it is for the general population.

Fish Oil for Bodybuilders

In particular, fish oil is known to have properties that can reduce recovery time, assist in burning body fat and provide assistance to the growth of muscles. Other advantages that may have relevance for bodybuilders include that it reduces blood pressure and may reduce the likelihood of suffering from either a heart attack or stroke.

Benefits of Fish Oil for Bodybuilders

Fewer Injuries and Tissue Inflammation
Scientific research has determined that fish oil supplements can reduce inflammation. As the nature of bodybuilding involves the overloading and stressing of muscles, then it is far from uncommon that bodybuilders suffer from injuries to muscles and joints through the repetitive lifting of weights. If there is less inflammation present and the recovery from training is shorter then it is considered the case that bodybuilders can either increase their workload or increase the frequency of sessions.

Fat Loss
Obviously bodybuilders are searching for an edge in order to move the fat to muscle ratio to the level that they desire. Most bodybuilders would tend towards having more fat that they would ideally choose. Fish oil can help move this ratio in the desired direction as research has indicated that fish oil can assist with the loss of fat.

Blood Pressure
Bodybuilders are notorious for having elevated blood pressure levels through the combination of the stress of their exercise regime when coupled with the fact that most would consume a higher level of red meat than the general population in order to increase the proportion of protein in their diet. Red meat consumption is directly linked to raised levels of blood pressure. Again, science has come to the rescue through blind trials which have determined that fish oil supplements can statistically significantly reduce blood pressure levels.

Dosage Information
Not oil fish oils are equal. Our typical diets can contain omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in a ratio of a minimum of 10:1. While fish oil can reduce the amount of inflammation, then the indications are that the ideal ratio to achieve this is to have the ratio much closer to 1:1. If there is excess of omega-6 fatty acid then it is possible that your body may be in a chronic state of inflammation and the muscles are constantly trying to be rebuilt. Fibrin is consistently laid down which can lead to the muscles having reducing pliability and flexibility.

If the balance between the fatty acids is correct then effectively it can be considered that the omega-3 offsets the over-building properties of the omega-6 and so a better balance is maintained in the muscles and the body in general. Thus, when you are looking for a fish oil supplement, ensure that it has omega-3 as the main constituent (there is invariably enough omega-6 in our diet). Generally the maximum dosage is suggested as being no more than 4g per day per person as it is possible to overdose on fish oil. If in doubt, then talk to your doctor or sports nutritionist for advice.
