  The Health Benefits of Ginseng

Throughout the Western world then there is a constant theme with respect to our health, as a society we are suffering from low energy levels and high levels of stress. There is a growing trend to look for natural and Eastern remedies for our health malaises and for this reason Ginseng has come to the fore as a potential solution.

Ginseng root

But What is Ginseng?
For those who are familiar with the natural health industry, Ginseng can be considered as being the best known of the Eastern herbs and there are claims that millions of people take it on a regular basis (in one of a number of different forms). It is present on the shelves of supermarkets, pharmacies and health food shops and so there is little excuse from being able to locate it.
About Ginseng
There are a number of different forms of Ginseng that are used in products such as Ginseng Tea, Ginseng capsules or however the Ginseng is to be ingested. For example, some of the possible sources include

  • Chinese/Korean Ginseng (Panax )
  • American Ginseng (also known as Panax quiquefolius) and
  • Siberian Ginseng.
While there are differences in their uses and the benefits of Ginseng that can be obtained, there are obviously similarities between them.

Benefits of Ginseng
While most people consider Ginseng because of low energy levels there are other health aspects that it may well provide health benefits. From an energy perspective, the Ginseng root can be used for both short term boosts of energy or for longer term remedy for those who are suffering from a general low energy level. When you consume a sufficient dose then Ginseng does have a stimulating effect so if you have a particular event that you need to be switched on for (such as jet lag an exam or sporting event) then you may consider taking the Panax form. (as a word of caution, always trial the use of any health care product rather than using it for the first time on the day of the relevant event).
Panax ginseng is recognised for being able lessen levels of fatigue and to improve alertness, memory and coordination. Other claimed benefits of Ginseng include the view that it may also be a sexual stimulant for males although the research in this area is sketchy and inconclusive. Siberian Ginseng may have different health care benefits, including antioxidant properties and the American Ginseng tends to be less stimulatory but may boost the immune system.

How Does Ginseng "Work"?
The root of the Ginseng plant is contains an active constituent which is known as ginsenoside, which is believe to be responsible for the energy and alertness boosting properties. If higher amounts of Ginseng are consumed then the research indicates that the energy levels are raised naturally at the same time that the mental functioning improves. Specifically the ginsenoside originating from Panax Ginseng has been proven to have inhibitory effects to the activating factor of platelets in the blood and as such may be useful for inflammatory conditions.

Ginseng Cautions and Ginseng Side Effect.
It is important to be aware that there may be interactions between Ginseng and other medications/stimulants so if you are considering taking Ginseng supplements then it might be a good idea to have a talk to your doctor or dietician to ensure that it will be safe and appropriate for your requirements. In particular, if you consume a fair amount of caffeine then it is possible that, in combination, you may suffer from sleeplessness and raised blood pressure. If you suffer from high blood pressure then you do need to be particularly cautious.
