Choosing a Massage School
Within most major cities in Australia there are a number of massage schools providing a range of courses and educational qualifications. Deciding which massage training you should choose is little different to choosing any other learning establishment. The most important factor is what you want to achieve with your qualifications. Do you want to concentrate on remedial or sports massage, is relaxation massage more your thing or do you have a particular leaning towards pregnancy massage for example?

Once you have screened the local schools to see if they offer courses that you are interested in, then you can begin to investigate further. Schools should be able to provide brochures and information packs that will be a useful resource. This resource should help you screen massage schools for class times that are compatible with your lifestyle and whether the massage course costs are within your price range.
Of particular relevance within Australia is checking whether the courses are accredited with professional organisations such as ATMS or ARM so that you will be able to offer health fund rebates to your clients for remedial massage. Individual health funds have individual requirements and it is worth checking whether your qualifications would be suitable for the major health funds, in particular Medibank Private, MBF, HCF and NIB.
Once you have decided on a short list of massage schools then the next step is probably to make a visit to check out facilities such as classrooms. Most massage schools offer a student massage clinic and paying for one of these student massages is a great way to get a first hand feel for the quality of the school, the quality of the teachers and the quality of the graduates.
In order to be successful as a massage requires good massage skills but almost as important is being equipped with business skills. Check out the attention paid to building your massage business and marketing skills. In addition ask the school to provide information about how successful they are at producing employable graduates - how successful are they in providing good jobs for therapists?
The more information that you obtain and the more questions that you ask, then the better equipped you will be to make the right decision regarding your first massage school. However, as a personal comment, I would offer that becoming a massage therapist is a lifetime journey, choosing the right massage school to begin with may not be as critical to the end result as your massage education and knowledge should be constantly increasing. The massage school is only the first step in providing you with the necessary formal qualifications to practice; your education should never finish.
