Welcome to the latest edition of Massage Moves.

We have mixed news from the therapists this month. Leonie has very recently given birth to a healthy boy, Tobias, and we would like to offer congratulations to her and Peter. Hopefully she will be back massaging sooner rather than later.

Carolyn will, unfortunately for us, be moving with her family to England and will no longer be available and we wish her and her family well.

I have cut back my time at my Maroubra clinic from 4 to 2 days a week so that I have more availability for home massage. So if you wish to see to make an appointment with me or any of the other therapists then please call us on 0421 410057.

Just a reminder that the next draw for the free massage will take place in mid September and as we notify the prize winners by email, just make sure that the info@innerwestmassage.com.au is not excluded by any spam filters by including it in your address book

    Best Regards.
Richard and the Inner West Massage Team.

The rise and rise of complementary medicine

A 2005 study "The Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine Among California Adults With and Without Cancer" was recently quoted in a chiropractic newsletter as evidence that chiropractors are the most commonly consulted Complementary and Alternative Medicine practitioners.

However there was interesting data regarding massage.

    Pregnancy, massage and stress reduction

Our expectations for a troublefree birth along with images of pregnancy/childbirth as a wonderfully blissful time can increase anxiety levels if we fail to meet these expectations. Other health issues, for mother and bub, can lead to women being concerned about how their pregnancy is progressing.
Experts agree that learning how to relax is of great importance and massage therapy in a relaxation conducive environment can play an important role.

    The Alexander Technique

Many of the problems that we see as massage therapists are directly related to posture (or more to the point poor posture). Right from childhood we develop muscular tension throughout the body which can result in postural defects. If this tension is not released then common problems can results such as back and neck pain, sciatica, headaches and insomnia. Massage can play an integral part in restoring natural balance but without postural awareness then problems are very likely to re- emerge.

The Alexander Technique is claimed to be an intelligent way of solving body problems, some directly associated with posture, others less so.
