Pregnancy Pilates in Sydney's Inner West

The body undergoes incredible physical, emotional and hormonal changes during pregnancy. Maintaining your body's tone and condition is critical for the rigours that lie ahead. However pregnancy is not the time to try and get super fit - your priority is purely maintenance of a fitness level that is beneficial for you and your baby.

Some of the goals of specific exercise for pregnancy are to:
  • assist your pregnancy being pain free and comfortable
  • prepare you for labour
  • ensure that the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic systems are functioning efficiently for you and your baby


We have previously written about the importance of Posture during Pregnancy - Pilates with the emphasis on alignment and posture is wonderful during a time of life when your posture is changing so dramatically. The slow controlled movements of Pilates are non-impact and thus will not put stress on the joints. When coupled with regular massage, Pilates can minimise your discomfort levels during pregnancy.





Pilates can meet specific goals through body/mind training. Other specific benefits of Pilates during pregnancy are that it
  • can teach you to relax, invaluable during pregnancy, labour and in those first weeks with your newborn baby.
  • can give you the tools to get to know your body and become sensitive to its needs
  • can balance pelvic instability resulting from the pregnancy hormonal changes required to loosen the pelvic ligaments.

One aspect that we consider with all Pilates training is that you consult trained and qualifed Pilates instructors in small class sizes, particularly for pregnancy Pilates. In our opinion gym classes with 10+ participiants is not ideal - the alignment and form critical for postural stability cannot be properly supervised. The benefits of Pilates can best be achieved by individual or small group tuition.
