  The Skinny on Your Suntan

Has anyone ever commented that you look radiant and that your skin tone is pleasantly tanned? Under normal circumstances, this might be received as an observant and welcome compliment, but could this be a warning you should heed? If you weren't born with a melanin advantage, you might have considered ways to achieve a more golden, brown, or darker-skinned complexion.

suntan and tanning bed

This quest for the perfect tan coupled with life-on-the-go has prompted millions to seek the convenience of an artificial suntan in glamour boutiques and tanning salons (a.k.a. commercial solariums) worldwide. Because of this demand, recreational and cosmetic use of tanning bed technology has become a five-billion dollar per year success since being introduced in the late 70's. However, is this really a healthy alternative to the rays of natural sunlight? Perhaps not.

Medical studies now indicate that achieving a "golden glow" by artificial means is harmful to your health. The damage from extended exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is linked first and foremost to premature aging of the skin with the additional consequences of an increased risk for skin cancer, suppression of the immune system, the development of cataracts, and damage to the retina. Of even greater concern is the fact that many tanning beds emit threefold the amount UVA radiation of natural sunlight; thereby increasing the risk for malignant melanoma - the deadliest of all skin cancers.

So what's THE SKINNY ON YOUR SUNTAN? If you find these factors alarming, but still wish to achieve a sun-kissed glow, consider the following tips:

  • A visit to your local department store's cosmetic counter will reveal that sunless tanning products are all-the-rage. These products will serve as a viable alternative to achieve the appearance of a perfect tan. Alternatively you may wish to consider trying a spray tan.
  • If you will continue your use of tanning beds, remember to follow the instructions closely. Do not exceed the recommended time for your skin type, wear protective goggles at all times, and schedule each session no less than 48 hours apart.
  • Visit with your dermatologist or skin-care professional regularly and report a change in the color or texture of your skin, which may include abnormalities such as excessive dryness and itching, suspicious growths, cracking, or bleeding.
  • Many have found themselves emotionally and chemically dependent on the effects and results of UV exposure. Learn to recognize the signs for the medically-recognized phenomenon of tanning addiction or tanorexia. These symptoms may include anxiety over missed tanning appointments, a relentless quest to achieve a darker skin tone, or an irrational belief that your skin is too pale with the reality - as observed by others - being otherwise.
  • Although previous damage is irreversible, minimize your risk for future skin damage by using a daily moisturizing cream and protective sunscreen whenever possible.

There's a fine line between having your skin appear sun kissed and sun damaged. If you suspect that you are suffering from a tanning addiction or experiencing the signs and symptoms of skin cancer, consult your dermatologist or other qualified medical professional immediately.
